Satisfy curious minds

Through engaging STEM investigations focused on sound physics, children satisfy their curiosity about how musical instruments work and how music is created.

Band Basics Instruments

All instruments are designed with the very young beginner in mind and require minimal, if any, setting up by the student.

Flute

Made of silver plated nickel like traditional flutes, this one includes a curved head-joint and has a right hand thumb rest which simplifies the holding and balancing of the instrument, making what was a challenge for children easy and natural. Removal of additional keys reduces the weight and size making it ideal for the young players.

Trumpet & Trombone

P-bone and the P-trumpet are made of plastic and carbon fiber so this instrument is incredibly light weight and robust. It has the added advantage of a treated mouthpiece that prevents bacteria. Sounds and operates just like the traditional brass instruments and is ergonomic for growing hands.

Saxophone

New to the market this instrument is made of light weight brass and shaped like a soprano and is extremely light weight. Made to the same quality as the traditional saxophone, this new instrument eliminates the low keys and side key mechanisms that are not used in the first stages of learning.

Students are expected to bring their loaned instrument and music book to each session.

Students experience one Brass (Trumpet or Trombone) and one Woodwind (Flute or Saxophone) each term.

This is a Full Year ASA and no re-registration for Term Two is required.

The rules are that sharing of instruments is not permitted in the class.

Students are given advice on how to clean and care for the instrument and mouthpiece.

Although carefully sourced and acquired for their robust attributes, the instruments should be handled with care.

Maker Band:

Saturday Term Course

Where Curious Kids Become Music Makers and Science Explorers

Every Saturday morning, your child steps into a vibrant musical world where they play, discover, and experience the joy of making music together. Over eight weeks, young explorers pick up real band instruments, uncover the science of sound, and build friendships that last well beyond the classroom.

No previous experience is preferred. Just bring curiosity.

About the Maker Band

Maker Band invites inquisitive children (6+) to become explorers in a hands-on musical world. Playing brass and woodwind instruments is only the beginning. Between playing, young musicians dive into fun STEM investigations that reveal how sound works, how instruments make music, and why acoustics matter.

Here's what makes it special:

  • Learn in small groups that keep every child seen, supported, and safe.

  • Play alongside experienced educators with music and education degrees who guide each step.

  • Discover music and STEM together as playing time weaves into interesting, hands-on science.

  • Build confidence and teamwork in a warm "Third Room" space to relax, make friends, and grow.

Located just a 5-minute walk from the MTR, with instruction in both English and Cantonese, the Maker Band fits busy Hong Kong families beautifully.

Choose Your Musical Adventure

Two course options, two ways to explore. Each pairs a brass instrument with a matching partner woodwind instrument, so children play, discover, and experience two very different sounds across the term.

🎵 Pipes and Slides

Flute & Trombone

Young explorers glide between the airy pipe of the flute and the smooth slide of the trombone. From delicate high notes to bold low tones, children discover how breath and movement shape music, building coordination and confidence along the way.

Key highlights:

  • Explore the flute to develop breath control and a light, precise touch.

  • Play the trombone to build arm coordination and a feel for pitch through the slide.

  • Investigate the science of air and sound through hands-on STEM activities.

  • Make friends and play together in a supportive small-group ensemble.

🎺 Buzz and Reeds

Trumpet & Saxophone

Young explorers feel the lively "buzz" of the trumpet and the warm hum of the saxophone reed. These two crowd-favorites help children discover how vibration creates music, growing their confidence with every note they play.

Key highlights:

  • Buzz the trumpet to build lip strength and a bright, confident sound.

  • Play the saxophone to discover how reeds turn breath into rich, warm tones.

  • Experiment with vibration and pitch through fun, guided science investigations.

  • Grow teamwork skills by playing music together as a small ensemble.
